I seem to be constantly 2 days behind on the comments; this is a reply to the question posted on June 17 -- where do you direct your energy during yoga practice (in the context of keeping the gaze soft). I think most of my energy is going into doing the poses and breathing in sync with the movements. As far as where the gaze goes -- I would have to say that mostly the attention is directed inward, so that even though I "see" things in front of me, I do not hook my attention on them. I am instead "seeing" the tendons, the muscles, the energy that is circulating in my body as I work. And once in awhile my gaze goes to my laptop because I am following along with online yoga practices.

On the subject of balance, I have to admit that since taking on the 30-day yoga challenge I have let many other things drop (just for now) -- from my 3 times per week gym workout to my daily walks and cello practice. But in all fairness, I have taken on a cleansing juice fast that is leaving me feeling pretty mellow. Yoga always feels a bit like cocooning or self-pampering, and this fits well with the cleanse. (I know, I know there are plenty of yoga forms that require plenty of hard work and stamina, but the most vigorous I have been getting these days is vinyasa flow.) After the fast I hope to get vigorous. So I guess we could call this my short-term state of imbalance (no workouts, no walks, no cello) for the sake of a greater long-term balance when I return to my usual routines. Hopefully this "spa" time will carry over into that daily routine even if only in some small ways.

Day 7 of the yoga challenge, and I'm loving it. I make time for yoga even if I have to squeeze it in last thing before bed. It feels so good to commit to something so wholesome.

On the topic of yoga and sleep: On Sunday I had a really busy day and was very tired when I got home. I did some yoga using a video with Leslie Fightmaster. Afterwards I felt much refreshed, but fell into a deep sleep during shavasana (spelling?) and woke up about half an hour later. I'm not sure that I would have allowed myself the gift of a nap if it had not been for yoga!

@yougoyogini - this also counts as your "yoga related photo" for the Challenge!

Day 1 - On Breath Awareness: I always focus on my breath when I am in the dentist's chair. It helps me to avoid tensing my body. I know it works because my dentists has commented on how relaxed I am (if only she knew!). I have also noticed in live chamber music how musicians breathe together; it helps them to stay connected. I do catch myself holding my breath when I am worried or concentrating, and try really hard to correct it.
